Hi everyone,
I'm posting this trip on behalf of Ashley Burke - who will be the trip leader. However, I will be assisting Ashley with admin and organisation... so send me all your emails, and I'll forward the tricky questions on to Ashley.
Two days of canyons in the northern Blue Mountains
Departing Sydney: 7am SHARP on Saturday 14 March
Returning Sydney: Sunday afternoon/evening 15 March
Pick-up points will most likely be Strathfield station and Hornsby station, but will depend on who ends up coming and who has cars etc.
This trip is an opportunity for new or existing members of SUBW to do some canyons near Mt Wilson in the Blue Mountains. Float on lilos down long deep pools through a steep sandstone gorge.
This trip is suitable for people with good general fitness. You don't need any canyoning experience... however, you will need to be able to walk approx 15 km per day, largely up steep hills. Some of the canyons may have abseiling and if you haven't abseiled before there will be the opportunity to learn this during the weekend. All the canyons will involve swimming and most probably floating on lilos down long pools. You'll get wet and stay wet for extended periods during the day. There is a steep climb in and out.
Canyons are COLD and SLIPPERY!!! In addition to standard camping/bushwalking gear, you will NEED to bring:
- a pair of Dunlop Volley sneakers - available from K-mart, Big W or Target
- two layers of thermal clothing or a wetsuit
- a lilo (rubberised canvas air bed) for floating down pools - available from Ray's Outdoors
DO NOT PLAN TO WEAR COTTON CLOTHING! Once it gets wet, it is VERY cold!!! Hypothermia is a real risk... even if it's 40 degrees outside, the water in the canyon may only be 3 or 4 degrees!!
The good news is that we'll be car-boot camping at Mt Wilson. So camping gear can be left at the camp site and we'll be walking with day packs only.
