*Personal Locator Beacon (PLBs) is the preferred term*
Keith Maxwell, BWRS, advises that the AMSA who monitor "distress beacons"
are emphatic about using correct terminology. For bushwalkers either of two
terms can be used. The general term "distress beacon" or "personal locator
beacon" (PLBs) are both acceptable. The term EPIRB must not be used as this
particular type of distress beacon is for use by mariners that is designed
to work on oceans, not land. PLBs are portable units used by bushwalkers, 4
wheel drivers and other land adventurers and are designed to fit into
pockets. They are activated manually.
Switch to digital 406 MHz prior to 1st February 2009 when the analogue 121.5
MHz beacons will no longer be detected. Your new 406 MHz PLB or other
distress beacon *must* be registered with the AMSA otherwise your beacon is
anonymous. Registration is FREE.
