Hi all, I will be running a beginner canyoning trip on the 20 to the 21st of
september.
WHERE- Newnes Plateu
WHO - anyone in the club who has ever wanted to try canyoning. no experience
necessary (experienced canyoners also welcome)
I will be limiting numbers on this trip, so get in early ;)
Interested? Read on.
We will meet at strathfield Station early saturday morning (time TBA) and
drive to deep pass ( roughly 3.5 hrs)
The first day of canyoning will involve 2 canyons. The first is Deep Pass
Canyon, which is a relatively dry walk-through canyon. You will get your
feet wet, and , if you choose, you can get even wetter on several slides and
water jumps. There are a few climb-down with the aid of a fixed rope. We
will have lunch at the end of the canyon, then spend a bit of time exploring
some interesting features around deep pass, before heading back up to the
cars. We will then drive (15 mins) to the campsite and set up camp, then do
a bit of abseil training from a nearby pagoda. As the sun sets we will walk
down through Wolgan View canyon (Dry, easy, but impressive) to a lookout and
drink beer/wine/eat snacks till it gets dark, then head back up through the
canyon and admire the glowworms before returning to the campsite and having
some more food/wine/beer.
Day two will be Tigersnake canyon, which has several easy (but spectacular)
abseils up to 25 metres but no swiming (your feet will still get wet though)
then head back to Sydney, probably stopping for dinner on the way. If people
have a problem with heights or abseiling, there are other options available.
NOTE: You do not need your own harness or descender (but if you have one,
bring it along)
IMPORTANT: Shoes with good grip are essential. NO BOOTS! old sneakers are
acceptable as long as they are not worn bald. I higly reccomend getting a
pair of dunlop volleys from K-mart or Target, as they are cheap and have the
best grip on wet rock of any shoe known to man.
Things you will need to bring:
-money for petrol/dinner/beer etc.
-warm clothes to wear around the campfire
-Warm clothes for canyoning.( these will get dirty, and possibly a little
wet. Thermals are good. A wetsuit is only reccomended if you want to do some
jumps in deep pass)
-Shoes with good grip that will get wet (sneakers with good grip are fine,
Dunlop volleys are ideal)
-dry shoes for around the campfire
-Camera ( although if you are worried about it getting wet/damaged, leave it
behind. I will be taking plenty of photos and you can get a copy of them)
-Beer
-hat and sunscreen/sunglasses
-raincoat (just in case)
-Torch (headtorch preferrably, but any will do as long as you have
batteries)
-a small backpack to carry your lunch and warm clothes
-food (1 breakfast, two lunches, one dinner. we will have a campfire for
dinner, but you can bring a stove to cook on if you prefer.
-cooking/eating utensils
-toilet paper
-Beer
-Beer
-sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent
-Wine & cheese
-anything else you want to bring
