The below walk, previously advertised for 10-11 May has been rescheduled to
17-18 May due to the original date not being convenient for several people
(Mothers' Day being on 11 May).

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,

The below trip is for any member of the club who is interested and keen to
learn how to find their way through the bush with map and compass.

Trip: Beginners' Navigation Weekend, upper Wollangambe, Blue Mountains.

Depart Sydney: 8am Saturday 17 May 2008
Return Sydney: Sunday afternoon/evening, 18 May 2008

Beginners and new members are welcome.

The aim of the weekend is to provide the opportunity for people to learn and
practise navigation with map and compass. The exercise will be conducted
over 2 days and we will camp out overnight on the Saturday night. People who
do not want to camp overnight may come for the Saturday only.

The overall format of the weekend will be as follows:

Saturday 17 May:

- Travel to Bell by car or train
- Begin an easy overnight walk, stopping frequently for tuition on
navigation principles.
- Stop at various vantage points on the way to identify landscape features
and work out our walking route.
- Learn to take and follow bearings etc.
- Use map and compass to find your way to a designated camp site,
accompanied by an experienced member of the club.
- Upon arrival at the camp site, enjoy an evening around the camp fire.

Sunday 18 May:

- Use your newfound skills to navigate to a designated location.
- Navigate your way back to Bell via a new route.
- Enjoy the scenery on the way
- An experienced member will accompany the group.

No prior experience is necessary, however you will need to bring your own
walking/camping gear, your own map and your own compass. Digital navigation
aids such as GPS devices may be carried for emergency use only, and must
otherwise remain switched off for the entire weekend. The aim is to learn
map and compass skills.
